There are all kinds of reasons to wish to build a small houseboat. Not only will you be able to build a liveable houseboat, you will be able to put it together quickly, probably in less than a week. From my perspective, it's all about accessing the water. Here in Ontario, shoreline property prices have mushroomed out of site and so, the houseboat is a ticket to spending weekends on the water and not losing your shirt.
Pontoons
There are all kinds of ways to build a hull for a houseboat but the simplest, most available method is by using pontoons.
Aluminum:
Most of the pontoon boats you see around these days ride on aluminum. these are by far, the best way to go. They are lightweight, rustproof and extremely durable. The only problem is they are quite expensive. If you are interested in using aluminum pontoons, you might be able to find an existing, used houseboat. Just strip it down and put your cabin on the deck. You can also purchase aluminum pontoons. Here's link to a supplier, here in Ontario.
Poly:
High Density Polyethlene Pipe
Recently, I came across a supplier of pontoons which really caught my eye. They are located in Huntsville Ontario. Here are some photos of their products. They take extruded pipe, typically used for water control and fabricate pontoons from it. These are amazingly strong and durable and cost considerably less than aluminum.
